The Memphis Urban League is an interracial, non-profit, nonpartisan, community-based organization that provides direct services and policy advocacy to help individuals and communities reach their full potential. Primarily working with African-Americans, the underserved and economically disadvantaged, we work to close equality gaps for people at all economic levels and stages of life.
The Memphis Urban League’s Department of Workforce & Economic Development was designed to address the employment needs of two constituencies–skilled workers who seek assistance in securing job opportunities and employers who need qualified applicants to fill job vacancies within the Memphis metropolitan statistical area. Through a variety of innovative projects and events, such as job fairs, specialized recruitment sessions, and networking opportunities, the Department of Employment and Training assists individuals in creating meaningful professional contacts that enhance their marketability and ultimately assist them in securing employment while simultaneously serving as an invaluable recruitment source to local companies. The Education & Youth Development (EYD) program is designed to help young people take control of their own educational outcomes. Education has an enormous impact on society and is more essential to a high quality of life than any other single factor. Although education is not the only indicator of opportunity, a lack of education and connection to the workforce translates into significant earning differences among individuals. The Memphis Urban League’s history dates back to 1932. Then, the Council of Social Agencies and the Directors of the Memphis Community Fund recognized the need for a social service organization to improve the living and working conditions of the Negro citizens of Memphis.
