Education & Youth Development

Empowering the youth leads to many possibilities.

Education Youth Development

Our Education & Youth Development (EYD) program ensures our youth are ready for college, work, and life. Our goal is to provide academic enrichment, civic engagement, college preparation, computer literacy, leadership development services and youth entrepreneurship.

Memphis Urban League strives to instill the moral character necessary to lead lives as innovative, productive thriving leaders in our communities.

EYD primarily serves middle school and high school-aged students in underserved communities, providing academic achievement, social and soft skills training, introduction into the workforce, college readiness, and youth leadership. Under the umbrella of Education and Youth Development sits 3 primary programs/initiatives: Project Ready, Youth Summer Academy, and Save Our Sons and Daughters.

Project Ready

Project Ready prepares the economically disadvantaged and other historically underserved youth for college, career and life. This initiative is a unique and comprehensive approach to addressing the academic, personal and social needs of the youth we serve. The curriculum for this program has 3 components: Academic Development, Social Development and Cultural and Global Awareness. Through the curriculum, workshops, seminars, community partnerships, corporate partnerships and real-life scenarios, this innovative approach equips middle through high school students with the tools to be successful in all their endeavors.

Youth Summer Academy

Youth Summer Academy is a 4-week paid training program that combines job readiness skills training and professional skill building to raise sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Every participant will receive soft skills and job readiness training that will address the significant gap in employability skills among young people in underserved communities. Through focused training in communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and professional conduct, we aim to prepare our youth to enter the workforce confidently and competently. In addition to this training, participants will have the opportunity to choose from in-demand “career track.”  Students will receive in-depth, specialized education and training in their chosen track that will give them the necessary foundation to be successful in their future careers.

Come back to apply for our summer program in March 2025.

Save Our Sons and Daughters

Save our Sons and Daughters is a mentorship program primarily focusing on opportunity youth ages 13-21.  Through mentorship, one-on-one counseling sessions, peer-to-peer support, group mentoring, and counseling, participants will identify and address barriers and obstacles that often derail youth from reaching their full potential. With a strong focus on conflict resolution, de-escalation training, emotional intelligence education, and stress and anger triggers training, these youth will be equipped to handle life’s many twists and turns.

This program also provides soft skills training, life skills training, financial literacy/stability education, job readiness training, health education, and wellness and mindfulness to advance self-efficacy and self-sufficiency.

In the second phase of SOSD, participants are offered job placement services to assist with obtaining and sustaining gainful employment.  Participants will also be paired with a mentor to ensure they receive continued support, guidance, and assistance on their road to leading productive lives. SOSD graduates will continue to be a part of the family by becoming mentors for those who come after them.
