Honoring the Legacy of Black Music: A Celebration of Black Music Month by the Memphis Urban League

In the words of President Joe Biden, “I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2023 as Black Music Month.” The Memphis Urban League,  joins the rest of the country in honoring the rich heritage, the profound impact, and the vibrant diversity that Black artists have brought to the world of music.

Black music is an integral part of our culture and community, shaping our collective history and defining moments in our lives. As an organization committed to empowering our community, the Memphis Urban League recognizes the profound impact and transformative power of Black music.

The contributions of Black musicians stretch back centuries, traversing continents, and genre boundaries. From the spirituals and blues born of pain and resilience to the birth of jazz, rhythm and blues, rock ‘n’ roll, hip-hop, and countless other genres, Black musicians have been at the forefront of cultural innovation.

Black artists like Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Duke Ellington brought the world to its feet with jazz. Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin brought the raw emotions of soul to the mainstream. Jimi Hendrix revolutionized rock ‘n’ roll with his electric guitar. The Supremes, under Motown Records, became a symbol of Black success in the music industry.

In more recent times, artists such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Prince have shattered records and broken barriers, paving the way for future generations. Today, artists like Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, and others continue to carry the torch, using their platforms not just to entertain but also to enlighten, educate, and advocate for racial justice.

At the Memphis Urban League, we strive to ensure that our community has the resources and opportunities it needs to thrive, and music is a vital part of that effort. Whether it’s through our community programs, our advocacy work, or our support for local artists, we’re committed to fostering a culture where Black music and musicians can flourish.

This June, and every day, we should reflect on how Black music has shaped our cultural landscape and brought us together in times of joy and sorrow. Black Music Month is not just a celebration of music; it’s a celebration of history, resilience, creativity, and the enduring spirit of a people.

Through their music, Black artists have given us much more than songs to enjoy; they’ve given us narratives to ponder, lessons to learn, and a legacy to uphold. As we celebrate Black Music Month, let’s commit ourselves to appreciating, supporting, and cherishing this rich heritage. And let’s use this music – the melodies of the past and the rhythms of the present – to guide us towards a harmonious future. As part of this, the Memphis Urban League reaffirms its dedication to amplifying the voices and stories of Black artists, and to using our platform to advocate for justice, equality, and opportunity in every sphere, including music.
