Empowering Histories,
Inspiring Futures:
The Stax Museum’s Role in Memphis and Beyond

Written By: JR Robinson

As Black History Month unfolds, the Memphis Urban League is proud to spotlight a cornerstone of Memphis’ cultural and historical landscape: The Stax Museum of American Soul Music. This feature is part of our “Empowering Histories, Inspiring Futures” initiative, celebrating the profound contributions of African Americans to the fabric of our society.

The Stax Museum, located at the original site of Stax Records, stands as a testament to the power of music to transcend racial and societal barriers. Founded in the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, Stax Records became more than a music label; it was a cultural phenomenon that brought together artists and staff of all races to create soul-stirring music that resonated across the globe.

A Beacon of Integration and Musical Innovation

At a time when segregation was the norm in the South, Stax Records emerged as a beacon of integration and musical innovation. The label launched the careers of legendary artists such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, and Booker T. & the MGs, among others. These artists not only defined the sound of soul music but also used their platform to voice the struggles and hopes of the African American community.

Stax Museum: Preserving the Legacy

The theatre’s commitment to showcasing the diversity of the Black experience is evident in its wide-ranging productions. From reimagined classics like “The Wiz” to original works that tackle contemporary issues, Hattiloo has been a platform for stories that resonate with authenticity and depth. Each production is not just entertainment but a thread in the rich tapestry of Black history, contributing to a greater understanding of the past and inspiring audiences to envision a more inclusive future.

Stax Museum: Preserving the Legacy

The Stax Museum of American Soul Music, which opened its doors in 2003, continues to preserve and celebrate this rich legacy. As the first museum dedicated to American soul music, it houses a vast collection of over 2,000 exhibits, including interactive displays, vintage musical instruments, and artifacts that tell the story of Stax Records and its impact on the world of music and civil rights.

Education and Community Engagement

Beyond its role as a museum, Stax is deeply committed to education and community engagement. The Soulsville Foundation, which oversees the Stax Museum, also operates the Stax Music Academy and The Soulsville Charter School. These institutions provide invaluable resources and opportunities for young people in Memphis, fostering the next generation of artists and leaders through music education and mentorship.

A Symbol of Resilience and Unity

The inclusion of the Stax Museum on the United States Civil Rights Trail further underscores its significance as a symbol of resilience and unity. By telling the story of American Soul Music’s role in the Civil Rights Movement, the museum serves as a reminder of how art can bridge divides and inspire change.

As we celebrate Black History Month, the Stax Museum stands as a shining example of the Memphis Urban League’s vision: a city where all people are empowered towards self-sufficiency and share in the city’s prosperity and well-being. Through the “Empowering Histories, Inspiring Futures” campaign, we honor the legacy of Stax Records and its continued impact on our community and the world.

Join us in this celebration, and let us draw inspiration from the stories of those who used their talents to fight for justice, create beauty, and change lives. Together, we can build a future that honors this rich heritage and continues the work of empowering communities and changing lives.

A Visionary Beginning

Hattiloo Theatre’s story is one of empowerment. Founded in 2006 by Ekundayo Bandele, the theatre was born out of a vision to create a space where the Black community in Memphis could see their experiences reflected and celebrated on stage. Named affectionately after Bandele’s daughters, Hatil and Illo, Hattiloo has since become a beacon of Black excellence and a hub for cultural expression.

Each production is not just entertainment but a thread in the rich tapestry of Black history, contributing to a greater understanding of the past and inspiring audiences to envision a more inclusive future.

Cultivating Community and Education

Hattiloo Theatre’s impact extends beyond the stage into the heart of the community. Through educational programs and initiatives, the theatre empowers young people to explore their creativity and develop their voices. These efforts ensure that the legacy of Black storytelling continues to thrive, fostering a future where the next generation can contribute their own chapters to the ongoing narrative of Black history.

Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead

The journey of Hattiloo Theatre has been marked by resilience in the face of challenges. The theatre’s growth, including the establishment of a permanent home in Overton Square, is a testament to the community’s support and the theatre’s unwavering dedication to its mission. As Hattiloo continues to evolve, it remains focused on uplifting Black voices and expanding the reach of Black theatre, ensuring that the stories told today will empower the histories and inspire the futures of tomorrow.

In honoring Black History Month, we recognize Hattiloo Theatre as a vital cultural institution that not only preserves and honors the past but also paves the way for a future where the arts remain a powerful force for change and empowerment. Through its dedication to the Black arts, Hattiloo Theatre is a shining example of how the celebration of history can inspire a future filled with hope, creativity, and excellence.

As we usher in Black History Month, the Memphis Urban League proudly launches “Empowering Histories, Inspiring Futures,” a campaign that shines a light on the vibrant Black arts scene in Memphis. At the forefront of this celebration is Kimberly Horton, the esteemed President and Executive Director of the Blues Foundation, whose leadership and vision are shaping the future of the blues in our city.

Kimberly Horton’s roots are deeply embedded in the rich soil of blues heritage. Hailing from Jackson, Mississippi, her love for the genre was cultivated early on and carried through her academic journey, culminating in a career that seamlessly blends her passion for music with her professional expertise. Horton’s tenure at Heathrow Muzik Box, a blues booking and management agency, laid the groundwork for her profound impact on the blues community.

Horton’s initiatives, particularly those focused on youth education and the modernization of the Blues Hall of Fame Museum, are ensuring that the blues remain a thriving and dynamic part of our cultural identity.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Horton’s personal life reflects her commitment to the arts. As a mother, she has passed on her love for music to her children, who are continuing her legacy in their own right. Her daughter now leads Heathrow Muzik Box, and her son is carving out his own path with the same spirit of excellence that Horton embodies.

The Blues Foundation, under Horton’s stewardship, stands as a testament to the enduring power of the blues. Situated near the National Civil Rights Museum, the Blues Hall of Fame Museum is not only a repository of musical history but also a beacon for future generations to discover and appreciate this quintessential American art form.

In the Summer of 2022, he made a triumphant return to the Hattiloo Theater, captivating audiences with his portrayal of Little Moe in “5 Guys Named Moe.” This resurgence marked a new chapter in his career, as he seamlessly balanced his on-stage performances with his responsibilities as a production stage manager.

The year 2023 witnessed AJ’s resurgence as a polymath, donning the hats of a director, writer, and producer. His creative resurgence laid the foundation for an independent journey that promises to redefine artistic expression. With ambitious projects on the horizon, including three original stage plays, a performing arts summer camp, and Saturday school under “The AJ Influence,” his impact on the local arts community is set to reach new heights.

As Black History Month unfolds, AJ’s narrative stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Black artists in Memphis. His unwavering dedication, artistic dexterity, and commitment to nurturing emerging talent encapsulate the spirit of creativity and resilience that defines Black history and culture.
