The AJ Influence: A Journey Through Memphis’s Performing Arts SceneAnthony T. James (AJ) has been a prominent figure in the Memphis performing arts community for over three decades. His remarkable journey from a budding artist to a multifaceted professional has left an indelible mark on the local theater scene. Born and raised in Memphis, AJ’s passion for the arts was ignited in 2006 when he was introduced to the world of performing arts through the YO! Memphis Performing Arts Academy. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a transformative odyssey that would see him excel both on and off the stage.
In 2013, AJ made his professional debut at the Hattiloo Theater, a renowned Black repertory theatre in Memphis, in the production of ‘Grease.’ This milestone not only showcased his talent as an actor but also signaled the start of a prolific partnership with the Hattiloo Theater. Subsequently, AJ’s involvement in various productions such as “If Scrooge was a brother,” “Who will bell the cat,” and “In The Heights” further solidified his reputation as a versatile and accomplished artist.
While AJ’s acting prowess shone brightly on stage, his creative ingenuity extended beyond performance. In 2016, he transitioned into the role of a director and stage manager, making significant contributions to the independent theatre community. His dexterity in overseeing productions and nurturing artistic endeavors exemplified his commitment to enriching the local arts landscape.
Despite finding success behind the scenes, AJ’s magnetic presence drew him back to the spotlight. In the Summer of 2022, he made a triumphant return to the Hattiloo Theater, captivating audiences with his portrayal of Little Moe in “5 Guys Named Moe.” This resurgence marked a new chapter in his career, as he seamlessly balanced his on-stage performances with his responsibilities as a production stage manager.
The year 2023 witnessed AJ’s resurgence as a polymath, donning the hats of a director, writer, and producer. His creative resurgence laid the foundation for an independent journey that promises to redefine artistic expression. With ambitious projects on the horizon, including three original stage plays, a performing arts summer camp, and Saturday school under “The AJ Influence,” his impact on the local arts community is set to reach new heights.
