On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to declare that all enslaved people were to be freed. But what does Juneteenth mean for us today, and how can we use this historic day as a model for our collective advancement?

Firstly, Juneteenth serves as a poignant reminder that freedom and equality are rights to be ceaselessly fought for and protected. The fight that led to Juneteenth wasn’t an easy one, but it yielded results – a lesson that remains relevant in our modern times as we continue to fight against systemic racism, prejudice, and inequality.

Secondly, Juneteenth underscores the importance of community and collective action. It reminds us of the power we hold when we stand united against injustice. As a community, we can learn from this model of collective action, using it to address the modern-day inequalities that we face.

Lastly, Juneteenth symbolizes hope. In the darkest days, the enslaved African Americans held on to the hope of freedom, and that hope eventually materialized. So too must we retain our hope for a better, more equitable future, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.

In the Memphis Urban League, as we honor Juneteenth, we also see it as a call to action. We are inspired by the spirit of Juneteenth – the spirit of resilience, hope, and relentless pursuit of equality. It is in this spirit that we pledge to continue our work, empowering communities and changing lives in Memphis. Because every step we take towards equality and justice, however small, is a step that brings us closer to a future where Juneteenth is not just a memory of past struggles, but a celebration of present triumphs.
