Pause for Peace
“Pause for Peace” encourages all residents, officials and religious leaders to take a moment at 9:01 a.m. and 9:01 p.m. daily for reflection or quiet breathing. This 90-day initiative runs from Wednesday, Sept. 17 to Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025.
“Memphis has always found strength in moments when we breathe and act together,” said Gale Jones Carson, president and CEO of the Memphis Urban League. “At 9:01—a number that is distinctly Memphis—we are asking our entire community to pause, focus on peace, and recommit to caring for one another.
HOW THE COMMUNITY CAN PARTICIPATE
- Pause at 9:01 a.m. and 9:01 p.m. for about one minute (or longer if you choose).
- Use the moment for silent reflection, prayer, mindfulness or a collective deep-breath count (for example, four slow inhales and exhales).
- Take time to speak positive words and affirmations over the Memphis community.
- Faith communities, businesses, classrooms and city offices are encouraged to ring a bell, dim the lights or make an announcement to signal the pause.
- Share encouragement on social media with #PauseForPeace and #MemphisUrbanLeague to inspire others to join.
“Mindfulness is not the end; it’s the beginning of better decisions, better care and better Memphis,” the Rev. Andre E. Johnson said. “For the next 90 days, let’s practice presence together and let that presence guide our actions.”
“When thousands pause with intention—across neighborhoods, traditions and roles—Memphis cultivates the compassion and clarity our city needs,” the Rev. Johnson Saulsberry said.
