The Memphis Urban League, an organization steadfastly dedicated to empowering communities and changing lives, is proud to highlight its distinctive program, “Save Our Sons” (SOS). SOS, a unique initiative specifically crafted for African-American males, ages 18 to 34, in Memphis and Shelby County, is paving a way for these young men to rise above the obstacles they face. The SOS program aims to advance workforce readiness and life skills, providing a robust set of resources focused on workforce training, financial literacy, family building, and health and wellness.

In 2018, we opened the doors to the Bernal E. Smith, II Empowerment Center, an extension of the Save Our Sons initiative. Named in honor of the late publisher of the Tri-State Defender, Bernal E. Smith, II, the Center exemplifies Smith’s unyielding commitment to mentorship and the development of young men in the African-American community. Smith was a distinguished member of the Memphis Urban League Board of Directors and a passionate advocate for the SOS initiative.

Smith’s legacy lives on, not just in the center that bears his name, but also through his remarkable dedication to creating economic opportunities for young men. His widow, Towanda Peete-Smith, generously donated over 150 suits, ties, shirts, and shoes to the initiative, furthering our mission and exemplifying the difference that a single act of kindness can make.

Our call to action, therefore, is threefold.

To the young men in our community who seek guidance, support, and the tools to carve out a bright future: Reach out to us. The SOS program is here for you, eager to welcome you and equip you with the skills and resources you need to succeed.

To the compassionate men in our community: Consider donating professional attire to the Bernal E. Smith, II Empowerment Center. Your generosity could make the difference in a young man’s journey to self-reliance and confidence.
